Which ambulance configuration fits the patient pathway?
Start with the patient pathway and the clinical work required during transport. Use the ambulance class as a starting point, then check how the crew and stretcher fit with the equipment and utilities. The final specification must also address cleaning and destination approval.
Start with the patient pathway
Describe the patient acuity and procedures expected during the transfer, along with the distance and receiving facility. Place each person in the compartment and check the equipment they need to reach while the vehicle is moving. Stable transport has different requirements from emergency monitoring or isolation-oriented movement; changing the class label alone does not address those differences.
Confirm which local or program definition is being used for Class A, B or C. Ambulance classifications can vary by destination, so the written project requirement should control the final scope.
Build the interior around workflow
Map the stretcher route from the rear or side entrance to its locked position. Check crew access to the patient, medical devices, oxygen, suction, storage, handholds and emergency exits. Every mounted item needs an identified position and restraint method. Loose equipment needs a storage and retention plan.
On the drawing, check treatment clearance and what seated crew members can see. Review door movement, cabinet access and the spaces that need cleaning. Every listed item must be reachable and safely secured in the working layout.
Reconcile utilities and payload
Bring the electrical supply and charging requirements into one utility schedule. Add lighting and HVAC, then oxygen and suction. Check normal demand and simultaneous use, with any backup requirement stated. For isolation duty, specify the pressure direction and airflow, along with filtration. The specification also needs alarm requirements and a measurement method.
Check payload after the body, crew, patient, medical devices, oxygen cylinders, consumables and loose equipment are included. The chassis and interior layout should be reviewed together rather than approved as separate choices.

- Patient types, procedures and transfer duration
- Crew roles, seating and stretcher workflow
- Medical equipment with dimensions, mass and mounting needs
- Oxygen, suction, electrical, charging and HVAC loads
- Cleaning, infection-control or isolation requirements
- Destination approvals, documents and inspection method
Ask suppliers to return an interior drawing and equipment schedule tied to the same revision. Mark customer-supplied equipment and unresolved interfaces clearly.
Inspection and acceptance
Use the approved layout to inspect the finished compartment. Check device mounts and restraints, then seats and stretcher locks. Test lighting and power outlets together with the oxygen equipment. Check HVAC and alarms, and reconcile labels with the supplied documents. Any pressure or airflow result needs its test condition and instrument recorded.

Repeated patient, seat or stretcher ranges do not distinguish the equipment included. Request a dimensioned layout and itemized equipment schedule. Clinical commissioning remains separate from vehicle acceptance; neither a class name nor a pressure-control label establishes treatment capability.
